Membership

BMS represents marketers within the book industry. It champions marketing professionalism and works on co-operative industry projects and events to raise the profile of books and help expand the UK book market. Anyone working for a publisher, bookseller, wholesaler or other associated areas of the book industry is eligible for membership.

Membership is open to anyone and includes:

  • Regular Member Meetings a year, with industry and outside speakers on topics of interest to marketers, drinks, networking, and presentations on forthcoming marketing opportunities
  • Marketing Primers: A packed day of speakers, up-to-date learning, creative thinking and campaign workshops covering the essential areas for early-mid level marketers. 2017 topics have included planning and budget setting, working with authors, market research and audience targeting, e-marketing, social media, SEO and copywriting
  • Marketing Masterclasses with James Spackman: an in-depth look at recent Adult, Children’s and Backlist campaigns featuring interviews with the teams behind them, plus an “open surgery” session for members where campaign dilemmas can be creatively and supportively addressed
  • Directors’ Dinners: our popular occasional series of dinners with an inspirational guest speaker
    continues, and is a valuable opportunity to meet with fellow comms directors across the trade

Fees

In 2017 we have revamped our subscription model to enable more company members of a team to enjoy the benefits of BMS membership. The new scheme is based on company turnover (as measured by Nielsen Bookscan). Any member of staff in a company in membership who is engaged or interested in book promotion and communications will now be entitled to come to meetings (space permitting).

We offer a discount of 30% for regional publishers who aren’t able to regularly attend meetings or training days (includes access to the members’ website and Facebook group)

*Freelancers are entitled to join the BMS at a flat rate of £135
